Iron-On Patch Application Instructions
Before You Begin
- Pre-wash the garment using regular laundry detergent only. Do not use fabric softener, scent additives, or laundry boosters. Some garments may shrink or contain excess dye that can affect adhesion.
- Ensure the garment is completely dry before applying the patch.
- Use a dry iron (no steam).
- Work on a firm, heat safe surface.
Step 1: Prepare the Area
- Preheat your iron to a high heat setting appropriate for the fabric (no steam).
- Lay the garment flat and smooth the area where the patch will be placed.
- Lightly pre-press the area for 3–5 seconds to remove moisture and wrinkles. Allow it to cool.
Step 2: Position and Protect
- Peel off the paper backing to expose the adhesive.
- Place the patch in the desired position.
- Cover the patch with a thin cotton pressing cloth or parchment paper.
Step 3: Apply Heat
- Press with firm pressure for 10–12 seconds. If the patch is large, move in sections so all areas receive full pressure. Allow to cool enough to comfortably handle (almost completely).
Step 4: Press from the Back
- Turn the garment inside out.
- Press the back side of the patch area for 10–12 seconds.
Step 5: Cool and Check
- Allow the patch to cool completely before moving the garment.
- If any edges lift, cover again and press that area for 5–8 seconds. Be sure to apply firm pressure from the back for repress.
After Care
- Wait 24 hours before wearing or washing.
- When properly applied, patches are machine washable.
- Wash on a gentle cycle with cool water.
- Avoid bleach, harsh stain removers, abrasive cleaning agents, and strong washing additives.
Why Is My Iron-On Patch Not Sticking?
If your patch is not adhering properly, one of the following may be the cause:
- The garment was not pre-washed and may contain sizing or residue.
- Fabric softener or laundry additives were used.
- The iron temperature was too low.
- Steam was turned on.
- Insufficient pressure was applied.
- The patch was moved before fully cooling.
How to Fix It
- Allow the patch to cool completely.
- Place a pressing cloth over the patch.
- Apply firm pressure for 10–12 seconds.
- Turn the garment inside out and press from the back for 10–12 seconds.
- Allow the patch to cool fully before handling.
For garments that will be worn and washed frequently, stitching around the edges provides additional long-term security.
